The Basics of Plantar Fasciitis: Symptoms and Causes

Plantar fasciitis is a foot condition commonly causing heel pain, primarily affecting the thick band of tissue, known as the plantar fascia, which runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes.

Symptoms typically include a sharp, stabbing pain in the heel or along the bottom of the foot, most pronounced with the first steps after waking up, after long periods of standing, or when getting up after sitting for a long time. The pain might lessen after a few steps but can reoccur with prolonged standing or when you stand up after sitting.

The causes of plantar fasciitis are often multifaceted, including repetitive stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia, which leads to irritation and inflammation. Risk factors include age (most common between 40 and 60 years), certain exercises (like long-distance running, ballet dancing, aerobic dance), foot mechanics (flat feet, high arches, or abnormal walking patterns), and occupations that keep you on your feet.
